Gastown Vocational Services - Education and employment support for individuals with a mental health disability

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

A range of services that assist adults and youth with mental health disabilities (aged 16 –30) to reach their employment or educational goals, including part-time or full-time work, vocational training, or volunteer work.
Comprehensive services include vocational or psychological/vocational assessment, work readiness skill training, career planning work experiences, and employment counselling. In the workplace, individuals participate in job shadowing and/or supported work experience placements to further assess their own work readiness, boost their confidence and stamina, and help identify a suitable vocational goal. Job developers actively assist with job marketing and job search. Supported education services include identifying realistic education programs needed for employment, sourcing educational funding, and finding training-on-the-job opportunities, and/or assisting clients to obtain their GED, academic upgrading, and /or enrolling in further education.

Outreach services are available for clients who may require assistance to engage.

For clients not receiving services at Vancouver Community Mental Health Services, a referral form needs to be completed by their medical practitioner or psychiatrist. Clients are invited to attend an orientation and information session where more information regarding referral will be provided.

Eligibility: Programs are for Vancouver residents aged 16 –30, except for the LINK program - a pre-employment program for clients who live in the Lower Mainland.
